Montana Knits, Inc., is a small commercial cashmere knitting company, founded in 1992. At that time, the cashmere-raising business in the US was just starting, and as a result of that, Montana Knits was the major buyer of US cashmere for all of its full time operation. While we used Italian and Chinese cashmere also, many of our garments were constructed of US cashmere. Since we raised over 4000 cashmere goats as well in a sister corporation, ours was the only company in the world that went from the goat to the garment on a commercial scale.

We knitted mostly for the wholesale market for 8 years full time, though we occasionally did custom knitting. Our major line was cashmere for babies, because there are only 2 or 3 other companies worldwide that produce cashmere garments for babies and children, and their styles are much like adult styles and not very whimsical. We prided ourselves for our original designs, which were both classic and fun, and sold these garments mostly wholesale
All our patterns are original, numbering about 200 in our current line. Not all of them are illustrated, but those that are are representative of our styles.

We applied at the US Patent & Trademark Office for a trademark in 1993, and after a very expensive seven year battle with Claude Montana over the use of the word “Montana” in a trademark, were granted our Trademark, which was renewed when due and is currently active. (The Trademark is not available for sale. It is currently housed at the Montana Historical Society)
